We are studying how the format of a written transcript affects how well people can understand conversations they did not witness. You will read transcripts of legal proceedings and answer comprehension questions about each one.
If you agree to participate, you will:
Total time: approximately 35–45 minutes in a single session. Please do not begin if you cannot complete the study in one sitting.
The transcripts in this study are drawn from real public legal proceedings and contain detailed descriptions of violent criminal offenses, including domestic violence and sexual assault. On the next screen you will be given a full description of the content. You may exit the study at that point and receive partial payment if you prefer not to continue.
You may experience psychological discomfort from reading descriptions of violent offenses. You can stop at any time without penalty. If you are affected by the content, the following free and confidential resources are available:
Beyond potential distress from the content, this study involves no other risks.
There are no direct benefits to you. Your participation will help improve the design of speech-to-text interfaces that support comprehension of multi-party spoken interaction.
We will not collect your name, email address, IP address, or any other directly identifying information. Your Prolific participant ID is used only to confirm completion and process payment through Prolific — it is not linked to your survey responses in our records. All responses are stored anonymously. Only aggregate data will be reported in any research publications.
Yes. Participation is completely voluntary. You may skip any question or stop at any time without penalty. Stopping will not affect your Prolific account standing. If you stop before completing the study, you will receive partial payment proportional to the time you spent.
